Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
