The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like standard biological terror, but beneath Together exists a profound examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story begins when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they still love one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the allegory never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu as of this moment.
