A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose term concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian works. They were completed at an rapid pace, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an prompt suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
