British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.
The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of entry passages providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
Daesh - also known as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.
UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," he said. "They were part of thousands of British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate militants who endanger our security, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."
In December, the US military conducted what it termed a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN says Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
