In the early hours of Saturday, reports emerged of major blasts shaking the Iranian capital, following claims from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preventative strike.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were audible in the city on Saturday. Simultaneously, columns of dense smoke were seen rising over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The type of these blasts indicates that this is a missile attack,” one news agency stated, though it did not immediately offer further details.
Context: Escalating Strains and Recent Events
The incident occurs against a backdrop of severely escalated tensions in the region. Major developments preceding this strike involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive build-up of US naval forces in the region, featuring the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with suggestions of more discussions planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the strike, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or face severe consequences.
Iranian Response
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had charged the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. They dismissed claims about missile development and casualty figures as baseless.
These developments is fast-moving, with further updates anticipated as the situation develops.
